Learning Muqarnas by Doing Muqarnas
Learning Muqarnas by Doing Muqarnas Learning by doing is at the core of understanding muqarnas as a traditional architectural art. Over the centuries, muqarnas have developed in different regions and stylistic periods throughout the Islamic world, with many voices and dialects. Each application is different. Some muqarnas follow classical traditions, while others evolve and introduce something new. Their beauty is a matter of taste. Like them or not, they are there. Their appearance is abstract and decorative. Yet all muqarnas have one thing in common: the magic of regularly shaped units assembled into symmetrically organised tiers, starting from a wide base and rising to a narrow top. After a half-hour introduction, participants in the Istanbul Design Center workshop can get their hands on the muqarnas pieces themselves. They can assemble sample muqarnas models by following exercises or experiment with a design of their own.
Workshop language is English.
